Meet The Artist
Aine Scannell
Artists statement
Aine grew up on the Southern coast of Ireland and regularly attended the local Roman Catholic church and the convent school, where her moral and intellectual guidance was attended to, by the nuns of the Ursuline order.
Aine's experience there might be described as regimental, colourful, liturgical and full of cerebral and emotional distortions of an anamorphic nature.
She is aware that the ritual, metaphor and symbolism which are a very deep rooted part of the Catholic religion, affected her imagination as well as of course all the inherrent narratives and iconography.
Since a small girl, Aine had, posessed a deep love and belief, almost, in the ‘magic’ inherent in the act of creation. Be it using a broom to play with lines of swept up dust, in the back yard, of her childhood home or writing a nine page poem about the after effects of the atom bomb Hiroshima.
“Coming into touch with printmaking practice whilst on my Masters Fine art course (Painting) in Barcelona, introduced me to a branch of fine art where I experienced a deeply felt perception, that there were no rules and a boundless field, in which it was possible to play with materials and meanings.
This exploration of materials began to enrich my art practice, in that I began to make prints and printmaking –based “installations”, as a way of enabling the process of communicationg complex and open ended concerns about issues that interested me.
These, I was able to realize by making reference to the inherent characteristics/social connotations of certain materials . Take for for example something like salt. It has associations with tears, sweat and healing. I could use that visually as a symbol and then also connect its physical use within the printmaking process(saline etc) too. For example It makes more sense when I am talking to you in front of one of my installations.”
I continue to love the dynamic that has opened up to me as an artist, the more I have become embroiled in explorations within my profession as a practicing printmaker.”
